GABA

If three or more of these descriptions apply to your present feelings, you probably need more GABA supplement.

• You often feel anxious for no reason.
• You sometimes feel “free-floating” anxiety.
• You frequently feel “edgy,” and it’s difficult to relax.
• You often feel a “knot” in your stomach.
• Falling asleep is sometimes difficult.
• It’s hard to turn your mind off when you want to relax.
• You occasionally experience feelings of panic for no reason.
• You often use alcohol or other sedatives to calm down.

Gamma aminobutyric acid - GABA, is one of the relaxing inhibitory neurotransmitters in your brain. As an amino acid, GABA is completely legal but you should still not consume this supplement in abnormal quantities!

Neurotransmitters are the chemicals released from one nerve cell to another across the synaptic cleft.  Major neurotransmitters implicated in psychopathology include norepinephrine (or noradrenaline), serotonin, dopamine, and gamma amino butyric acid (GABA).

The neurotransmitter serotonin is produced from the amino acid 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP). GABA is mainly produced from the amino acid glutamine. A deficiency in any of these nutrients can cause an assortment of health related illnesses, especially mood and sleep disorders

Both GABA and 5HTP, have a calming effect on the brain, while not having enough of these chemicals in your brain can cause the effects presented in the list above and in a more serious form, even anxiety disorder.GABA, the brain’s natural tranquilizer, gives the user relief from anxiety. This amino acid has been shown to also help increase human growth hormone levels when taken internally.

ANXIETY DISORDERS An anxiety disorder can be defined as an inappropriate expression of fear. It is the most common psychiatric disorder effecting 15% of the American population each year.

Panic Disorder is characterized by panic attacks or sudden feelings of intense terror that occurs without warning. Symptoms include palpations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, tingling sensations, and chills or blushing. Attacks are short lived about 30 minutes, and people with the disorder describe feeling overwhelmed by fear and impending doom. The onset of panic disorder is after adolescence and before 50 years of age. This disorder often leads to alcoholism or other substance abuse problems in about a quarter of the clinical cases.

Agoraphobia is the fear of being in situations in which escape might be difficult or embarrassing. People with this disorder will avoid being outside and in public places with other people and in crowds.

TREATMENT

Psychotherapy is treatment that involves the therapist gradually increasing exposure of the patient to the stimulus that produce anxiety and reinforce the notion that the stimulus is not dangerous.

Anxiolytic Medications are major classes of drugs used in the treatment of anxiety disorders including benzodiazepines and serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors.

Serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) like Prozac prolong the actions of released serotonin at their receptors by inhibiting reuptake. This is a good OCD treatment, but it takes much longer to work than benzodiazepines.

Benzodiazepines bind to one of the GABA binding sites and make GABA much more effective in opening the channel and producing inhibition.   The reasoning behind Benzodiazepines working in the brain is due to the suppression of activity in brain circuits used in stress response. A benzodiazepine, Valium, stimulates GABA (an anxiolytic) actions reducing anxiety.   The anxiolytic effects of alcohol are also an obvious reason that anxiety disorders and alcohol abuse are close at hand.

Anti-anxiety medication increases GABA at the receptor sites.

This means that in order to treat anxiety you need to take either medication such as benzodiazepines (most popular is valium or diazepam) or you can choose to take natural GABA supplement and therefore  increase GABA levels in your brain! It is readily and quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, and gaba amino acid supplement will be ffective for relieving anxiety if it succeeds in crossing the blood brain barrier. Higher dosage will certainly ensure this.

Usually only a small dose of GABA is needed, 500–1,000 mg. taken twice daily on an empty stomach. The brain doesn’t readily absorb GABA, but another amino acid known as L-theanine, can boost GABA levels. L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea has a calming effect on the brain. For anxiety related disorders the usual dose is 50-100mg taken on an empty stomach, two to three times daily.

B-Vitamins and Mood

Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of folic acid in reversing depression. One study showed that 92% of the folic acid group made a full recovery compared with only 70% of the control group who took the standard prescription drug therapy. Those who received the folic acid spent only 23 days in the hospital while those on prescription therapy alone averaged 33 hospital days.

Vitamin B-1, also known as Thiamin, is important for proper cell function, especially nerve cells.  It is involved in the production of acetylcholine.  This nerve chemical is directly related to memory and physical, as well as mental energy. A deficiency of Vitamin B-1 can lead to fatigue, mental confusion, emaciation, depression, irritability, upset stomach, nausea, and tingling in the extremities.  Vitamin B-1 has been reported to be deficient in almost 50 percent of the elderly.  Could this be one of the reasons pre-senile dementia and Alzheimer’s disease have increased so dramatically over the last few decades?

Vitamin B12 helps form the myelin sheath that insulates nerve processes. This sheath allows rapid communication from one cell to another. A deficiency of B-12 can cause a reduction in mental acuity, evidenced by poor memory. Could this be the cause of their Alzheimer’s or senile dementia? Both Alzheimer's and senile dementia can be due to an overlooked deficiency of Vitamin B-12. Calcium, which is dependant on adequate stomach acid, is necessary for normal absorption of B-12. A Vitamin B-12 deficiency is usually caused by malabsorption and is mainly seen in elderly patients taking antacids or acid blocking drugs (Tagament, Prilosec, Tums, Nexium, Zantac, etc.). Because this deficiency is routinely seen in the elderly, I believe everyone over the age of 60 should be taking sublingual Vitamin B-1

GABA and HGH –Human Growth Hormone

GABA is a natural, inexpensive, and effective way to increase HGHA study from the First Medical Clinic at the University of Milan in Milan, Italy showed "In all of the 19 subjects studied, compared with 18 controls, plasma growth hormone levels were significantly increased (above 5 mg/ml) by acute oral administration of 5 g of GABA " The hypothalamus is a region of the posterior section of the brain and is the regulating center for visceral (instinctive) Functions such as sleep cycles, body temperature, and the activity of the pituitary gland.

There have been literally hundreds of clinical studies on GABA and numerous studies on GABA's ability to elevate growth hormone levels. This study showed over a 5 1/2 fold increase in plasma growth hormone levels 90 minutes after GABA administration. That is a significant increase unmatched by any other nutritional means. GABA's growth hormone elevating effects is said to rival that of potent pharmaceutical compounds.

Maximum Results

To benefit from GABA's ability to increase growth hormone levels and fat burning capabilities, you can start by taking 3−5 mg per day. HGH is released within 90 minutes of falling asleep so if GABA is beingused for fat loss it should be taken immediately before bed. Taking GABA before bedtime will also help
improve sleep cycles leading to more restful and also has a calming affect. If GABA is being used for it's calming properties or any of it's other positive benefits it may be taken anytime.
