GABA If three or more of these descriptions apply to your present feelings, you probably need more GABA supplement. • You often feel anxious for no reason. Gamma aminobutyric acid - GABA, is one of the relaxing inhibitory neurotransmitters in your brain. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals released from one nerve cell to another across the synaptic cleft. Major neurotransmitters implicated in psychopathology include norepinephrine (or noradrenaline), serotonin, dopamine, and gamma amino butyric acid (GABA). The neurotransmitter serotonin is produced from the amino acid 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP). GABA is mainly produced from the amino acid glutamine. A deficiency in any of these nutrients can cause an assortment of health related illnesses, especially mood and sleep disorders Both GABA and 5HTP, have a calming effect on the brain, while not having enough of these chemicals in your brain can cause the effects presented in the list above and in a more serious form, even anxiety disorder.
ANXIETY DISORDERS Panic Disorder is characterized by panic attacks or sudden feelings of intense terror that occurs without warning. Symptoms include palpations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, tingling sensations, and chills or blushing. Attacks are short lived about 30 minutes, and people with the disorder describe feeling overwhelmed by fear and impending doom. The onset of panic disorder is after adolescence and before 50 years of age. This disorder often leads to alcoholism or other substance abuse problems in about a quarter of the clinical cases. Agoraphobia is the fear of being in situations in which escape might be difficult or embarrassing. People with this disorder will avoid being outside and in public places with other people and in crowds. TREATMENT Psychotherapy is treatment that involves the therapist gradually increasing exposure of the patient to the stimulus that produce anxiety and reinforce the notion that the stimulus is not dangerous. Anxiolytic Medications are major classes of drugs used in the treatment of anxiety disorders including benzodiazepines and serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors. Serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) like Prozac prolong the actions of released serotonin at their receptors by inhibiting reuptake. This is a good OCD treatment, but it takes much longer to work than benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines bind to one of the GABA binding sites and make GABA much more effective in opening the channel and producing inhibition. The reasoning behind Benzodiazepines working in the brain is due to the suppression of activity in brain circuits used in stress response. A benzodiazepine, Valium, stimulates GABA (an anxiolytic) actions reducing anxiety. The anxiolytic effects of alcohol are also an obvious reason that anxiety disorders and alcohol abuse are close at hand. Anti-anxiety medication increases GABA at the receptor sites. This means that in order to treat anxiety you need to take either medication such as benzodiazepines (most popular is valium or diazepam) or you can choose to take natural GABA supplement and therefore increase GABA levels in your brain! It is readily and quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, and gaba amino acid supplement will be effective for relieving anxiety if it succeeds in crossing the blood brain barrier. Higher dosage will certainly ensure this. Usually only a small dose of GABA is needed, 500–1,000 mg. taken twice daily on an empty stomach. The brain doesn’t readily absorb GABA, but another amino acid known as L-theanine, can boost GABA levels. L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea has a calming effect on the brain. For anxiety related disorders the usual dose is 50-100mg taken on an empty stomach, two to three times daily. B-Vitamins and Mood
